How to Choose a Mono-Green Commander
- Choose whether you want lands, mana creatures, counters, tokens or one large attacker to do most of the work.
- Identify what the commander supplies. A mana engine still needs cards and a finish; a large attacker still needs protection and a way through blockers.
- Keep interaction for creatures, artifacts and enchantments, plus a way to recover after a board wipe.
- For cards with more than one face, check the entire card’s color identity. A green front face alone isn’t enough.
- Tell the other players if the plan uses poison, repeated land denial or an early infinite combo.

Clear first projects
Best Mono-Green Commanders for Beginners
| Commander | Starting plan | What the deck still needs |
|---|---|---|
| Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma | Develop mana, cast large creatures and attack. | Enough early plays, draw and protection. |
| Toski, Bearer of Secrets | Use a broad creature board to draw from player hits. | Evasion and a combat payoff. |
| Ayula, Queen Among Bears | Play Bears for counters or targeted fights. | Useful Bear density and recovery. |
| Bristly Bill, Spine Sower | Use ordinary land plays to seed counters. | Draw, interaction and a way through blockers. |
These are understandable starting plans, not priced decklists. Basic Forests simplify the mana base, but expensive cards elsewhere can still raise the deck cost. Price the full 100 cards, including the commander, before treating one of these plans as a budget build.
Brackets, optimized builds and competitive evidence
Whole-deck expectations
Mono-Green Commander Brackets
Brackets describe the complete deck and intended game, not a fixed rating attached to a commander. The same Marwyn or Lumra can lead a slower creature deck or a fast combination deck.
| Bracket | Build direction | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| 2: Core | Straightforward development and a slower combat finish. | No Game Changers, intentional two-card infinite combos, chained extra turns or mass land denial. |
| 3: Upgraded | More focused synergy with stronger resources and recovery. | Up to three Game Changers; no early two-card infinite combos, chained extra turns or mass land denial. |
| 4: Optimized | Fast mana, efficient tutors and compact finishes. | An optimized casual deck isn’t automatically a tested competitive deck. |
| 5: cEDH (competitive Commander) | A complete list built for competitive multiplayer play. | Use current lists and recorded events, not the commander’s reputation alone. |
Wizards’ current bracket and Game Changer guidance is the authority. Game Changers are cards on that official high-impact list; the limit counts your commander too. Mass land denial means destroying, exiling or repeatedly preventing the use of several lands. Bracket 1, Exhibition, prioritizes a theme over power and can include exceptions agreed by the players.
Wizards’ October 2025 bracket update sets expectations of at least eight turns for Core, six for Upgraded and four for Optimized before winning or losing. Competitive games can end on any turn. These describe the intended experience, not a promise that every game lasts that long.
Upgraded plans
Best Mono-Green Commanders for Bracket 3
- Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma: a creature curve and ordinary combat.
- Greensleeves, Maro-Sorcerer: landfall attackers with a visible setup.
- Toski, Bearer of Secrets: creature hits supply cards for later turns.
- Ayula, Queen Among Bears: Bears, counters, useful fights and recovery.
The actual support cards decide whether the list fits. A fast tutor package or an early game-ending combination can change the experience even when the commander stays the same.
Optimized plans
Best Mono-Green Commanders for Bracket 4
- Selvala, Heart of the Wilds: use one large creature to generate mana for several plays.
- Marwyn, the Nurturer: use cheap Elves to grow the commander’s mana output.
- Lumra, Bellow of the Woods: recover sacrificed lands and use their entry abilities.
- Yisan, the Wanderer Bard: plan useful creatures at each successive mana value.
A Marwyn activation making three mana isn’t infinite by itself. You would also need a repeatable way to untap her, enough mana to pay for that ability, and a way to use the surplus. Choose the full list’s speed and finish before assigning its bracket.

Mono-Green cEDH Commanders: Tournament Evidence
Competitive Commander (cEDH) evaluates complete lists for tournament play. Among the eight checked profiles, Lumra has the most recorded entries. This makes it a useful first list to investigate, not a proven strongest commander. Compare its land-based plan with Yisan’s creature search, Selvala’s large-power mana or Marwyn’s Elf mana. Entry counts describe attendance in the source, not wins or proven head-to-head strength.
| Commander | Recorded entries | Records inspected |
|---|---|---|
| Selvala, Heart of the Wilds | 14 | 14 returned records; no additional page reported. |
| Marwyn, the Nurturer | 6 | 6 returned records; no additional page reported. |
| Yisan, the Wanderer Bard | 28 | 28 returned records; no additional page reported. |
| Ashaya, Soul of the Wild | 3 | 3 returned records; no additional page reported. |
| Yeva, Nature's Herald | 2 | 2 returned records; no additional page reported. |
| Lumra, Bellow of the Woods | 137 | 48 returned records; additional pages not inspected. |
| Eladamri, Korvecdal | 8 | 8 returned records; no additional page reported. |
| Titania, Protector of Argoth | 0 | 0 returned records; no additional page reported. |
Lumra’s view reports 137 entries, but this review inspected 48 returned event records. We don’t publish an aggregate conversion rate or win rate from that incomplete sample. Titania’s zero entries in this view doesn’t prove that nobody plays the commander. Follow the source links for the actual lists and event filters.
Selection, source limits and shopping information
How choices were checked
Mono-Green Commander Selection Method
- Selection: 100 distinct green-only commanders, checked against complete Oracle records, paper legality, commander eligibility and a released exact printing. This is a thematic shortlist rather than a claim that these are the 100 most popular or strongest commanders overall.
- Order: Each theme starts with an editorial recommendation for that strategy. Numbers restart in each theme; they aren’t a universal power ranking.
- Popularity: Individual EDHREC profiles describe collected public decks over the past two years, checked October 14, 2026. Deck counts aren’t sales, unique players or tournament wins.
- Competitive evidence: The separate EDHTop16 comparison uses the past six months and events of at least 50 players. Returned-page limits remain visible.
- Rules: Each profile links its exact printing’s Oracle text. Both faces, required targets, zones, mana restrictions and trigger limits were reviewed. This guide doesn’t claim first-hand testing.
- Shopping: Each portrait opens a verified internal card page. Each shopping button opens the pictured exact printing with a supported foil or nonfoil finish. No current-price, cheapest-cart or stock claim is made.
EDHREC’s methodology describes the source’s deck collection. The dated counts help you find existing builds; the comparisons explain which strategy each commander supports.

Elves
Best Mono-Green Commanders for Elves
Marwyn builds mana as you play Elves. Choose Ezuri instead when the rest of your deck already produces plenty of mana and needs a repeatable trample finish. Freyalise trades that explosive mana for artifact and enchantment removal.
1. Marwyn, the Nurturer

Elves become a growing mana source
Marwyn turns each other Elf entering under your control into a counter, then taps for green mana equal to her power. If a 1/1 Marwyn sees Llanowar Elves and then Priest of Titania enter, she grows to 3/3 and can tap for three green mana once summoning sickness no longer applies.
Choose Marwyn when you want your commander to make mana as the Elf board grows. Ezuri instead turns mana into a combat finish. Beast Whisperer can keep cards coming as you cast creatures, so losing Marwyn doesn't also leave you with an empty hand.

Shop Marwyn, the Nurturer2. Ezuri, Renegade Leader

A repeatable finish for an Elf army
Ezuri gives a developed Elf board a clear destination for its mana: five mana buys another +3/+3 and trample boost for your Elves. Repeating that activation can turn small mana creatures into lethal attackers.
His one-green-mana regeneration protects another Elf, not Ezuri himself, and it doesn't stop exile or effects that prohibit regeneration. You still need enough Elves and mana before his combat ability is a meaningful threat.

Shop Ezuri, Renegade Leader3. Dionus, Elvish Archdruid

Elf taps produce counters and an untap
Dionus gives each of your Elves a once-per-turn trigger when it becomes tapped during your turn. That Elf untaps and receives a counter, so mana creatures can help twice while your attackers grow.
The restriction belongs to each creature, but only applies during your turn. This isn't an unlimited untap loop by itself. Combat, mana abilities and other tap costs offer different ways to use the one extra untap.

Mana creatures and removal from a planeswalker
Freyalise can be your commander because her text explicitly allows it. Her +2 creates an Elf Druid that taps for green mana; her -2 answers an artifact or enchantment, giving an Elf deck useful tools in the command zone.
Her ultimate draws for your green creatures, so a developed board matters more than simply reaching six loyalty. Plan to defend her against attacks. She isn't a creature that joins an Elf attack or receives ordinary creature protection.

Shop Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury5. Eladamri, Lord of Leaves

Protection and Forest-based evasion for other Elves
Eladamri gives other Elf creatures forestwalk and all other Elves shroud. These abilities also help opponents' Elves. Forestwalk stops a defending player with a Forest from blocking those Elf creatures; shroud stops every player's targeted spells and abilities from choosing protected Elves.
That protection also prevents you from targeting your own Elves with an Aura, an equip ability or a counter-placing ability. Eladamri doesn't protect himself with either ability. Choose him for an army that can attack without needing individual targeted upgrades.

An Elf lord with combat lifegain
Dwynen makes your other Elves larger and gains life for each attacking Elf whenever she attacks. Her reach also gives the deck a blocker against flyers, a useful distinction from an Elf commander that only makes mana.
The lifegain requires Dwynen to attack and counts your attacking Elves. It doesn't replace card draw or automatically convert that life into a win. She's a straightforward creature-board choice rather than the strongest mana engine in this group.

Best Mono-Green Commanders for Lands and Landfall
Lumra recovers a whole graveyard of lands; Azusa accelerates lands you can already play from hand. Greensleeves makes attackers from each land entry. Ashaya is the alternative when you want nontoken creatures entering to trigger landfall.
1. Lumra, Bellow of the Woods

A single entry returns the land graveyard
Lumra mills four cards when it enters, then returns all land cards from your graveyard tapped. Zuran Orb can put lands there by sacrificing them for life. Casting Lumra afterward brings those lands back, including lands that were in the graveyard before the four-card mill.
Choose Lumra when you want to rebuild many buried lands at once. Azusa is cheaper and lets you play extra lands, but doesn't recover them by herself. Lumra's returned lands are tapped, and graveyard exile can remove the entire payoff. Its tournament attendance is reviewed separately below.

Shop Lumra, Bellow of the Woods2. Azusa, Lost but Seeking

Three land plays on your own turn
Azusa lets you play two additional lands on each of your turns. A hand stocked with lands can develop quickly without spending every extra mana on a ramp spell, making land draw and land recursion natural partners.
She doesn't find those lands or create extra land plays on opponents' turns. A hand with one land barely uses the ability. Prioritize ways to keep lands available instead of assuming the commander alone supplies a complete ramp engine.

Shop Azusa, Lost but Seeking3. Greensleeves, Maro-Sorcerer

Every land creates a substantial attacker
Greensleeves makes a 3/3 Badger whenever a land enters under your control, while her own size tracks your land count. Extra land plays and returning lands build both a wide army and a large commander.
Her protections cover planeswalkers and Wizards, not every source of removal. The Badgers have no built-in evasion. A combat payoff or a way to use those bodies gives the deck a better finish than accumulating tokens alone.
2,497 EDHREC decks (past two years; October 14, 2026). Oracle text and rulings. Compare singles printings and prices.
Shop Greensleeves, Maro-Sorcerer4. Titania, Protector of Argoth

Sacrificed lands become 5/3 Elementals
Titania returns one targeted land from your graveyard when she enters. After that, each land you control going from the battlefield to a graveyard creates a 5/3 Elemental, rewarding fetch lands and repeatable sacrifice outlets.
Discarding or milling a land doesn't trigger the token ability. The deck needs land recovery so sacrificing its mana base doesn't leave it stranded. Her tokens arrive without haste or trample, which makes the combat follow-through worth planning.
2,732 EDHREC decks (past two years; October 14, 2026). Oracle text and rulings. Compare singles printings and prices.
Shop Titania, Protector of Argoth5. Titania, Nature's Force

Forest recursion with Elemental payoffs
Titania lets you play Forests from your graveyard and makes a 5/3 Elemental whenever a Forest enters under your control. That is a more specific land plan than her other versions: the Forest subtype matters.
You still follow your normal land-play limit unless another card changes it. Elemental deaths may mill three cards, helping refill the graveyard. Graveyard protection and a mix of actual Forests keep the engine working after removal or exile.

Shop Titania, Nature's Force6. Titania, Voice of Gaea

A meld project built around Argoth
Titania gains two life when one or more land cards go into your graveyard from anywhere. Her larger payoff requires owning and controlling both her and Argoth, Sanctum of Nature, with at least four land cards in your graveyard at your upkeep.
The lifegain happens once for a simultaneous batch of lands. The meld also needs the named land and the upkeep conditions; it isn't an ability you can activate immediately. Choose her when assembling that specific transformation is part of the appeal.

Shop Titania, Voice of Gaea7. Mole Man, Moloid Master

Land recursion supplies a Minion army
Mole Man lets you play lands from your graveyard and creates a 1/1 Moloid whenever a land enters under your control. Attacking Moloids may mill cards, feeding the graveyard while the next land produces another body.
Playing lands from the graveyard doesn't increase the number you can play. The small tokens need a combat boost or another use. This is a recurring land-and-creature engine, not a guarantee that milling will always reveal another land.

Shop Mole Man, Moloid Master8. Nissa, Resurgent Animist

Landfall mana with a second-trigger reward
Nissa produces one mana of any color whenever a land enters under your control. When that ability resolves for the second time in a turn, she also finds the next Elf or Elemental from your library and puts it into your hand.
The second resolution is the important threshold, not every later landfall trigger. The creature goes to your hand rather than the battlefield. Shape the Elf and Elemental choices deliberately if you want that search-like reveal to provide a dependable role.

Early land access followed by a planeswalker
Nissa's front face finds a basic Forest for your hand. A land entering while you control at least seven lands transforms her into Nissa, Sage Animist. The seventh land can trigger that change; you don't have to wait for an eighth land.
Casting Nissa while you already have seven lands doesn't transform her by itself. You need another land entry, and at least seven lands when the trigger resolves. Her Forest goes to your hand, while her planeswalker +1 can put a revealed land directly onto the battlefield.

A land-sized threat that can return to hand
Multani grows for lands you control and land cards in your graveyard, with reach and trample giving that size practical combat uses. Sacrificing or milling lands doesn't erase their contribution as long as they remain in your graveyard.
From the graveyard, you can pay two mana and return two of your lands to hand to recover Multani. That's a real cost, but it can also restock a landfall hand. Graveyard exile shuts off both that recovery and the buried-land contribution.

A land-sized attacker with graveyard recovery
Sandman's size equals your land count, and creatures with power two or less can't block him. A land-heavy deck can pressure opponents without needing a separate Equipment package to grow its commander.
His five-mana graveyard ability returns both Sandman and a targeted land tapped. That can restore a threat and a resource, but it doesn't create an immediate attacker. Larger blockers and graveyard exile still matter.

Shop Sandman, Shifting Scoundrel12. Braulios of Pheres Band

Attacking draws a card and develops a land
Braulios grows with your land count. Each attack draws a card and then lets you put a land from your hand onto the battlefield, connecting ordinary combat with continued development.
The land doesn't have to be the card you just drew, and putting it onto the battlefield isn't a normal land play. Braulios still has to survive long enough to attack. Protection or haste helps more than filling the deck with lands alone.
403 EDHREC decks (past two years; October 14, 2026). Oracle text and rulings. Compare singles printings and prices.
Shop Braulios of Pheres Band13. Toph, Earthbending Master

Landfall builds permanent experience counters
Toph gives you an experience counter for each land entering under your control. When you attack, she earthbends a land using that experience total, making a hasty land creature with that many counters. The counters stay with you if Toph leaves the battlefield.
The land becomes a creature after attackers have been declared, so it can't join that same attack merely because it has haste. You can use it for mana or defense, or attack in a later combat. Kyoshi animates before attackers are declared, which makes her the more direct choice for attacking with the new land immediately.

Shop Toph, Earthbending Master14. Avatar Kyoshi, Earthbender

A large animated land every combat
At the beginning of combat on your turn, Kyoshi puts eight counters on a land, makes it a hasty creature and untaps it. Because this happens before attackers are declared, the land can attack in that combat. You can also tap it for mana instead, but then it can't attack unless you untap it again.
Kyoshi has hexproof only during your turn. Her six-mana cost is a slower setup than a cheap landfall commander, but the attack doesn't need a graveyard full of lands. Earthbending returns the land tapped after it dies or is exiled.

Large creatures determine the animated land's size
The Boulder earthbends a land when it attacks, with counters based on your creatures with power four or greater. It counts the creature board, so a deck with lands but no large creatures gets little from the ability.
The animated land can't join that same attack: the trigger resolves after attackers have been declared. Haste still lets a newly played land tap for mana once animated, and the land returns tapped after death or exile. Choose Kyoshi if you want the newly animated land to attack in the current combat.

A death trigger chooses lands or a large Spirit
When Kura dies, you can find up to three land cards for your hand or create a Spirit sized by your land count. Flying and deathtouch make the original body useful while you wait for that death payoff.
The lands aren't put onto the battlefield, and the Spirit doesn't inherit Kura's flying or deathtouch. Choose the option that addresses your current hand and board. Sacrifice outlets can control the timing, but the trigger doesn't make Kura return by itself.

Nontoken creatures also become Forests
Ashaya makes your nontoken creatures Forest lands while keeping their other types. New nontoken creatures can therefore trigger landfall, and established creatures can produce green mana through the Forest land ability.
Tokens do not become Forests through Ashaya. Newly entered creatures still obey summoning sickness when tapping for mana, and removing Ashaya removes the added land type. Verify those conditions before relying on a creature-and-land loop.

Best Mono-Green Commanders for +1/+1 Counters
Bristly Bill can grow creatures already on the battlefield and double their counters without attacking. Choose Arwen if you want new creatures to enter large, or Rishkar when the counter-covered creatures need to make mana for your next spells.
1. Bristly Bill, Spine Sower

Landfall starts counters; mana multiplies them
Bristly Bill puts a +1/+1 counter on a targeted creature whenever a land enters under your control. His five-mana activation doubles those counters across your creatures. One counter becomes two, then four with a second activation, as long as nothing else changes the count.
The activation doubles existing +1/+1 counters, so a creature with none gains none from it. Choose Bill for counters on an existing board; Arwen instead makes later creatures enter with counters. Rancor can give a growing attacker trample, because counters alone don't let it pass a small blocker.

A broad counter multiplier with haste
Vorinclex doubles counters you would put on permanents or players and halves counters opponents would put, rounding down. That reaches beyond creature size to loyalty and poison, making the chosen counter package crucial to the deck's experience.
His effect cares who would put the counters, not simply who controls the permanent. He also needs six mana and doesn't produce cards by himself. State your intended poison, planeswalker or combat plan clearly before the game.

Each counter placement gives Mowu one extra
Mowu adds one counter whenever one or more +1/+1 counters would be placed on it. Several separate placements can be more productive than one large batch, while vigilance and trample make the growing body useful in combat.
Adding five counters at once gives Mowu six, not ten. The ability only improves counters placed on Mowu. Choose repeatable counter sources and protection rather than assuming a global counter card boosts every creature the same way.

Green creature entries grow the commander
Yorvo starts with four counters and gains another whenever another green creature enters under your control. If that creature's power is greater than Yorvo's after the first counter, he gets a second counter from the trigger.
The comparison uses the updated power, so matching the old value isn't enough. Yorvo has no built-in trample or draw. Creature development grows him naturally, but a way through blockers is necessary to turn that size into player damage.

Arwen's toughness shapes incoming creatures
Other creatures you control enter with additional counters equal to Arwen's toughness. Increasing that toughness before deploying your next creatures can make an entire hand of modest threats enter much larger.
This doesn't improve creatures already on the battlefield, and Arwen excludes herself. Timing a toughness boost matters more than casting it after the new creature arrives. Include useful creatures whose abilities remain worthwhile even if Arwen is removed.

An extra counter on every other creature
Renata puts an extra counter on each other creature you control as it enters. Her own power follows your devotion to green, making green mana symbols in your battlefield cards part of her combat value.
The extra counter is a simple foundation for counter synergies, but Renata doesn't double existing counters or supply card draw. Her devotion changes as permanents leave. Favor creatures with useful jobs over cards chosen only for their green symbols.

Counters turn your creatures into mana sources
Rishkar distributes counters to up to two targeted creatures when it enters. Each creature you control with any counter then gains a green-mana tap ability, so a counter deck can develop without relying entirely on dedicated mana creatures.
Creatures still obey summoning sickness when tapping for mana. Rishkar can place a counter on itself, but it won't be ready immediately without haste. Leaving some creatures untapped gives you a choice between combat and casting the next spell.

New creatures build a proliferate turn
Tromell adds a counter to each other nontoken creature entering under your control. Paying one mana and tapping him proliferates once for each of your nontoken creatures that entered that turn.
Proliferating adds one of each counter kind already present; it doesn't create a counter type from nothing. Tokens don't increase the activation's count. You need Tromell ready to tap after developing the board, so haste and careful sequencing matter.

A growing attacker with a built-in reset
Lily enters with two counters, then checks her power each upkeep. At power sixteen or less she doubles her counters; above that threshold she removes all but one counter and gains life for the counters removed.
The condition checks power, while the doubling and reset affect counters. Other boosts can change which branch happens. This is an unusual counter-management commander, not an attacker whose power doubles forever without a reset.

Damage grows Strong and adds radiation
Damage dealt to Strong gives you three rad counters and places three counters on him. Radiation then gains you life rather than costing you life, creating a self-mill and damage-survival plan distinct from ordinary landfall counters.
Strong has to survive the damage for the larger body to remain useful. Radiation still mills cards and depends on what is milled; its life replacement doesn't remove the rest of that process. Choose damage sources and graveyard uses together.

Professor Hojo reduces the first activated ability during your turn that targets your creature by two generic mana. A separate once-per-turn trigger draws when one or more of your creatures become targets of an activated ability.
The draw can happen on another player's turn, while the discount only applies during yours. Neither ability repeats without its stated limit. Favor repeatable targeted abilities you would already want, rather than paying for weak effects solely to trigger a draw.

One large creature sizes the whole team's boost
Tyvar's five-mana activation boosts your creatures by the greatest power among creatures you control when it resolves. With a 6-power creature as your largest, the ability gives the whole board +6/+6 for the turn. Bristly Bill grows counters permanently; Tyvar turns existing size into a temporary team-wide attack.
Tap another untapped creature you control to give Tyvar indestructible for the turn. The ability then taps Tyvar, but you can activate it even if Tyvar is already tapped. Exile and sacrifice still get around indestructible, so that ability doesn't answer every removal spell.

Selvala needs one large creature to make a lot of mana, while Omnath rewards mana you already generated by saving the green portion. Seton is the specialist for Druids that can tap immediately, including creatures you just played.
1. Selvala, Heart of the Wilds

Large power becomes a large mana activation
Selvala turns the greatest power among your creatures into mana, after paying one green mana and tapping her. With a 12-power Ghalta, Primal Hunger on your battlefield, the ability makes twelve mana in any combination of colors. Marwyn needs Elves to grow; Selvala can use one large creature of any type.
Her entry-triggered draw can benefit an opponent whose new creature is larger than every other creature. She also needs haste or a turn without summoning sickness before tapping. Unlike Omnath, Selvala doesn't preserve unspent green mana between steps and phases.

Stored green mana also grows your commander
Omnath preserves unspent green mana through steps and phases and gains size for each green mana in your pool. A ramp turn can therefore build a threatening commander without spending all the mana immediately.
Only green mana receives that protection. Removing Omnath can expose the stored mana to the next step or phase ending. Keep a useful way to spend it and protection for the commander rather than treating stored mana as permanently banked.

Seven lands in hand unlock a Forest engine
Sasaya requires revealing a hand containing at least seven land cards to flip. Her flipped side then rewards tapping lands that share names with your other lands, making a large basic-Forest count the straightforward plan.
Those seven lands must be in your hand, not on the battlefield. Holding that many can make early turns awkward, so land draw and a destination for the eventual mana are essential. She is a deliberate build-around rather than a generic ramp commander.

Large creature spells untap your mana source
Gwenna taps for two mana restricted to creature spells and abilities of creature sources. Casting a creature with power five or greater adds a counter and untaps her, helping chain large creatures when the rest of their costs are covered.
Her mana can't pay for a generic noncreature ramp or protection spell. The untap triggers on casting, not when a creature is put directly onto the battlefield. Those distinctions determine which discount effects and creature engines actually work with her.

Forests and green creatures can untap together
Patron taps to untap all Forests and all green creatures, once each turn. That includes opponents' qualifying permanents, but repeated uses across different turns can make your own mana sources work far more often.
Snake offering allows an unusual casting route by sacrificing a Snake and paying the mana-cost difference. It isn't a blanket free cast. The large initial cost and shared untap make this a specialized engine that needs careful timing.

Immediate creature abilities, with restricted mana
Shang-Chi lets you activate your creatures' abilities as though they had haste. His own tap ability makes two mana of one color, usable only for activated abilities of creature sources.
This doesn't let a newly entered creature attack, and the mana can't cast creature spells. Choose creatures with meaningful tap activations and paid abilities. He fits an ability-focused deck more naturally than an ordinary big-creature curve.

Druids pay Seton's mana ability by tapping
Seton lets you tap an untapped Druid to produce green mana. Because the tapping is a cost of Seton's ability rather than that Druid's own tap-symbol ability, newly entered Druids can contribute immediately.
The mana package wants actual Druids, not every small green creature. Seton doesn't draw cards or provide a combat finish. A modest creature type can still become an explosive mana engine when the deck keeps drawing useful Druids.

1. Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma

Large creatures become cheaper and gain trample
Goreclaw discounts creature spells with power four or greater by two generic mana. When she attacks, your creatures with at least four power get +1/+1 and trample. That makes her a flexible large-creature commander, while Gargos and Baru reward narrower Hydra and Wurm decks.
The discount doesn't pay colored mana. End-Raze Forerunners qualifies for the reduction and gives your other creatures +2/+2, vigilance and trample when it enters. Its eight-mana cost becomes six with Goreclaw alone, but you still need a creature board worth boosting.

Existing creature power discounts a huge threat
Ghalta costs less for the total power of creatures you control. Small creatures and a single large body can help cast a 12/12 trampler, making the battlefield you already developed matter to the next threat.
Only the generic portion of the cost is reduced. Removal before casting can change that discount, and Ghalta supplies no cards by itself. Protection, haste and draw based on creature size give the large body more than one useful role.

One entry deploys the creatures in your hand
Ghalta's entry puts any number of creature cards from your hand onto the battlefield. The payoff can be enormous when your hand is stocked, and each of those creatures can bring its own entry abilities.
This doesn't cast those creatures, so cast triggers don't happen. Ghalta also doesn't draw the hand it needs. Plan card draw and recovery alongside the shortcut; an empty hand leaves you with a large trampler rather than a full army.

Hydra discounts paired with targeted-spell fights
Gargos reduces your Hydra spells by four generic mana. Whenever one of your creatures becomes the target of a spell, Gargos can fight an opposing creature, making protective or growth spells potential removal as well.
Abilities that target your creatures don't trigger that fight, and Gargos is the fighter rather than the spell's original target. Damage can accumulate over several fights. Keep enough actual Hydras to justify the commander without forgetting protection and draw.

Wurm size reduces a repeatable token cost
Baru gives your Wurms +2/+2 and trample. His eight-mana tap activation makes a Wurm, with its generic cost reduced by the greatest power among your Wurms, so an established threat makes the next one cheaper.
The colored green mana remains payable, and Baru needs to be ready to tap. The deck wants Wurms that do more than provide size. Draw and useful entry effects help a creature-type plan avoid becoming a hand of expensive attackers.

She isn't a creature until your green devotion reaches five. The activation can spend mana without drawing a card, and it doesn't cast the revealed creature. Balance enough lands and interaction against the creature density her engine wants.

Saproling combat damage multiplies the army
Whenever one of your Saprolings deals combat damage to a player, Shroofus makes that many new Saprolings. Shroofus itself has trample, so increasing its power can start the army while later combat steps multiply the bodies.
The trigger requires damage to a player, not a creature. Newly made Saprolings still need haste or a later turn to attack. Build the next attack around the new bodies rather than assuming they can attack immediately.

Oviya's cheaper tap activation makes a Servo, while her larger activation creates a Construct sized by your creature count. A broad board can therefore become one large token without abandoning the smaller bodies.
Both activations need Oviya ready to tap and require mana. Making a Construct doesn't give it trample or haste. Untapping Oviya, preserving the existing creatures and supplying draw makes the growing-token plan work more consistently.

Second-card draws produce Cats on different turns
Jolrael creates a Cat when you draw your second card each turn. Repeatable draw during opponents' turns can make several Cats around the table, rather than only during your own main phase.
Her six-mana activation sets your creatures' base size to the number of cards in your hand until end of turn. That rewards retaining cards before combat. Later draws in the same turn don't each create another Cat.

Damage converts counters into Spirits
Sekki enters with eight counters. If nine damage would be dealt to it, its replacement effect prevents that damage, removes the eight available counters and creates nine Spirits. The number of Spirits follows the damage amount, not the number of counters actually removed.
Without another toughness boost, Sekki then has zero toughness and dies. Sacrificing any eight Spirits can return it from your graveyard; they don't have to be its own tokens. Damage that can't be prevented still removes counters and creates Spirits. This is a damage-and-recovery deck with more rules to track than Shroofus.

Each new Bear brings counters or a fight
Ayula gives every other Bear entering under your control a choice: add two counters to a Bear, or have one of your Bears fight an opposing creature. Modest Bears can therefore develop a threat or answer a blocker.
The fight needs legal targets and a Bear that survives the damage. Ayula's own entry doesn't trigger her. A low creature curve and ways to replay Bears make more sense here than choosing only the largest Bears available.

Token makers also create Food
Peregrin adds one extra Food whenever an effect creates one or more tokens under your control. Khalni Garden, for example, makes a Plant and an additional Food when it enters. Sacrificing three Foods draws a card without paying for their usual life-gain abilities.
One batch of tokens adds one extra Food, not one per token. The draw needs three actual Foods, so a single Garden entry isn't enough. Peregrin supports many token makers; the Cabbage Merchant instead rewards opponents' noncreature spells and uses untapped Foods for mana.

Small deathtouch creatures threaten poison wins
Fynn gives an opponent two poison counters whenever one of your deathtouch creatures deals combat damage to that player. Five qualifying hits can reach the normal ten-counter loss threshold, even if the creatures dealt little damage.
Fighting or dealing noncombat damage doesn't trigger Fynn. Opponents can block the small attackers or remove the commander before damage. Tell the table this is a poison plan and build ways to connect, rather than treating deathtouch as automatic player damage.

Six recasts different nonland permanents from the graveyard by discarding lands. Yedora instead preserves your dead nontoken creatures as Forests, while Shigeki returns nonlegendary cards to hand. Choose which resource you want back and where you need it.
1. Six

Discarded lands fund repeated permanent spells
Six grants retrace to nonland permanent cards in your graveyard during your turn. You can cast them again by paying their usual costs and discarding a land, giving extra lands a use after your mana base is established.
This doesn't return lands through retrace or let you ignore spell timing. Six's attack mills three cards and may put a milled land into your hand, helping stock both sides of the exchange. Graveyard exile remains a direct threat to this plan.

Dying creatures return as face-down Forests
Yedora can return another nontoken creature that dies under your control face down under its owner's control. It is a Forest land without its old types or abilities, preserving a mana resource after creature removal.
Tokens don't return, and the Forest isn't automatically the original creature again. Any plan to turn it face up needs a legitimate rule or ability. That distinction matters especially when evaluating proposed creature-and-land loops.

Land development followed by flexible recovery
Shigeki can pay two mana, tap and return to hand to reveal four cards, put a revealed land into play tapped and send the rest to your graveyard. That both develops mana and fills a later recovery pool.
Its channel ability discards Shigeki and returns X targeted nonlegendary cards for its stated cost. It can't retrieve legendary cards through that ability. Large recovery turns cost substantial mana, so treat them as a payoff for development rather than free recursion.

Permanent cards discount a combat-resistant threat
Diamond Weapon costs one generic mana less for each permanent card in your graveyard. Its combat-damage prevention and reach let the resulting body attack or block without dying to ordinary combat damage.
Nonpermanent cards don't reduce the cost, and the discount doesn't erase colored mana. Noncombat damage, exile and other removal still work. A self-mill deck should have additional graveyard payoffs so the commander isn't its only reason to fill that zone.

Yeva is the most flexible starting point for casting green creatures during opponents’ turns. Yisan finds creatures from the library in an exact mana-value sequence. Kona can deploy any permanent from hand but needs to be tapped at a specific time.
1. Yeva, Nature's Herald

Green creatures can be cast on other turns
Yeva lets you cast green creature spells as though they had flash. Holding mana for an opposing turn lets a creature's entry ability respond to a developing board or lets you commit a threat after a sweeper.
You still pay the creature's mana cost and follow its other restrictions. This doesn't give flash to every noncreature green card. A creature-heavy deck with useful entry effects makes better use of the flexibility than a pile of plain attackers.

A tapped commander bypasses a permanent's mana cost
At the beginning of your second main phase, a tapped Kona can put a permanent from your hand onto the battlefield. That can be a creature, artifact, enchantment, land or planeswalker. Tap Kona before the phase begins; tapping it afterward is too late to trigger the ability.
If Kona stays on the battlefield, it must still be tapped when the trigger resolves. Untapping it first stops the effect. If Kona leaves instead, use whether it was tapped just before leaving. A safe way to tap Kona avoids a dangerous blocker, and the permanent enters without being cast.

A cheap activation deploys creatures or Vehicles
Paying one green mana and tapping Oviya can put a creature or Vehicle from your hand onto the battlefield. An artifact entering this way also receives two counters, making artifact creatures and Vehicles particularly relevant choices.
Her trample ability applies to every creature attacking one of your opponents, including another player's creature. Oviya must be ready to tap and doesn't refill your hand. Card draw and useful entry abilities keep the shortcut productive.

Extra land access feeds a six-card creature search
Loot grants an additional land play on each of your turns. Its six-mana tap activation looks at six library cards and can put a creature onto the battlefield if its mana value doesn't exceed your land count.
The revealed creature is selected from those six cards, not searched from the whole library. Other cards go to the bottom. Lands and creature density both matter; a low land count can leave a powerful reveal outside the activation's limit.

Your first creature spell each turn gets a discount
Radagast discounts the first creature spell you cast each turn by two generic mana and lets you cast that spell as though it had flash. Taking advantage on opponents' turns can spread development across the round.
Only the first qualifying creature spell that turn receives this treatment. The discount doesn't pay colored mana. Choose creatures whose entry abilities are useful at different times, rather than assuming every creature in the hand remains discounted afterward.

A creature chain based on exact mana values
Yisan's activation adds a verse counter, then finds a creature whose mana value is exactly equal to his verse-counter total. The first activation can find Llanowar Elves at mana value one; the next can find Priest of Titania at two. Neither is cast, so Beast Whisperer won't draw for those entries.
The activation costs three mana and requires tapping Yisan. If he's removed and recast, the new Yisan starts with no verse counters. Build useful choices at each mana value instead of assuming every activation can find any creature. Yeva is more flexible about which creature you cast, but needs it in your hand.

Toski draws from each creature that hits a player, making small evasive attackers useful. Choose Reki if you want cards from casting legends even without attacking, or Radagast the Brown when your creatures have varied types.
1. Toski, Bearer of Secrets

Creature hits turn into cards
Toski draws a card whenever one of your creatures deals combat damage to a player. A wide board or small evasive creatures can keep the hand full, while Toski's own indestructible body provides a resilient starting attacker.
Toski must attack if able and doesn't give the rest of the army evasion. Tokens that never connect don't draw cards. The commander fits a combat deck that needs sustained resources more than a deck expecting one giant creature to draw its power in cards.

Legendary spells replace themselves
Reki draws whenever you cast a legendary spell, including eligible noncreature spells. A deck of useful legends can therefore maintain its hand while developing distinct abilities instead of relying on one creature type.
Putting a legend straight onto the battlefield doesn't trigger Reki, and legendary lands aren't cast. Choose legendary cards with real jobs in the deck. The draw engine is valuable only when the resulting spells also produce a coherent way to win.

Varied creature types reveal more options
Each nontoken creature entering under your control lets Radagast look at cards equal to that creature's mana value. You may take a creature that shares no creature type with any creature you control.
The chosen card goes to your hand, not the battlefield. A crowded board with repeated types can shut out otherwise appealing reveals. A varied creature collection suits Radagast better than an all-Elf or all-Human deck trying to use the same draw plan.

Creature casting advances a dungeon once per turn
Varis ventures into a dungeon when you cast a creature or planeswalker spell, once each turn. Completing a dungeon then creates a Wolf, giving a creature deck a sequence of incremental rewards rather than a single large entry payoff.
Casting multiple creatures during your own turn doesn't produce multiple ventures through this ability. Casting on other turns can provide additional progress. The commander rewards a chosen dungeon plan and flexible timing, not simply the highest possible creature count.

Choose Aeve to turn a spell-heavy turn into several creatures. Thrasta is the alternative when you want one large attacker with haste and trample immediately. Aeve’s new Ooze tokens still need help to attack that turn.
1. Aeve, Progenitor Ooze

A sequence of spells produces an Ooze board
Aeve copies itself for each spell cast before it that turn, and those copies become nonlegendary tokens. Each Ooze also arrives with counters for your other Oozes, turning a carefully funded spell sequence into a growing board.
Spells cast by any player count for storm, but you still need to cast Aeve. The tokens don't have natural haste or trample. Recurring cheap spells, enough mana and a way to use the resulting bodies are separate requirements.

Earlier spells discount a hasty trampler
Thrasta costs three generic mana less for each other spell cast that turn. Trample and haste give a successful casting turn immediate pressure, while hexproof protects it during the turn it entered.
The discount doesn't remove the two green mana symbols. Its hexproof expires after the entry turn, and it doesn't create the spells needed for the discount. A spell-chain deck still needs cards and mana before the Dinosaur becomes an inexpensive attacker.

Voice of Hunger slows opponents by keeping lands tapped after they use them for mana. The transforming Vorinclex instead finds Forests and develops your own creatures through a Saga. Choose the latter when you want that creature plan without denying opponents land untaps.
1. Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger

Extra land mana with a disruptive opposing cost
Vorinclex adds an extra mana when you tap a land for mana. Opponents' lands tapped for mana then skip untapping during their next untap step, creating a strong resource-denial effect alongside your own acceleration.
That denial changes the table's ability to play, so discuss it before the game. Eight mana also makes Vorinclex a late engine without additional support. It doesn't automatically tap lands or stop lands that haven't been used for mana.

Forest finding leads into a three-chapter transformation
This Vorinclex finds up to two Forest cards for your hand on entry. Paying eight mana at sorcery speed transforms it into a Saga with creature deployment, counters and a temporary paid-fight ability before it returns to the front face.
The first chapter only chooses creatures from its ten milled cards, and the third chapter's fights still cost mana. The Forests initially go to hand rather than onto the battlefield. This is a substantial transformation project, not the counter-doubling Vorinclex.

Pia is a specialist for finding an enchantment you plan to cast, not a broad enchantment draw commander. If your main goal is to draw repeatedly, compare Toski for creature hits or Reki for legendary spells instead.
1. Pia, Aether Ascetic

An entry finds a chosen enchantment for hand
When Pia enters, you may discard a card to search for an enchantment and put it into your hand. Find Rancor when a large attacker needs trample, or Lignify when a creature's abilities are the problem. You still have to cast the enchantment and choose a legal target if it's an Aura.
Pia doesn't draw an extra card for every enchantment or put the searched card onto the battlefield. Recasting her from the command zone also increases the cost by two mana each time. She's a specialist when finding a particular enchantment matters, rather than a general enchantment value engine.
