Reign of Dragons Upgrade Plan

  • Keep Lathliss, Dragon Queen as your commander. The first priority is reaching six mana with enough cards left to follow her with another Dragon.
  • Lathliss makes a 5/5 flying Dragon when another nontoken Dragon enters under your control. Her own entry makes no token, and the tokens she creates don’t trigger her again.
  • Cast a nontoken Dragon after Lathliss, then use Dragon Tempest or Scourge of Valkas to turn both new bodies into damage. Attack with the growing flying board once it is safe to commit.
  • This is a proposed upgrade path for the October 2, 2026 Foundations Commander precon. The list and interactions have been checked; it hasn’t been playtested.
Lathliss, Dragon Queen, Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander #219
One real Dragon can bring a second flying threat, but only after Lathliss is on the battlefield.

Ganax, Astral HunterGoldlust Triad$5.23
CLB #176

MSC #802
  • These five added cards total $9.44 in the identified October 20, 2026 Scryfall USD references, before shipping and tax. These aren’t delivered checkout prices.
  • Mind Stone and Liquimetal Torque enter untapped. Ganax rewards Dragon entries, while the two draw spells help turn an awkward expensive card into another chance at lands and spells.
  • Keep the deck’s existing Dragon Tempest, Scourge of Valkas, Herald’s Horn, Dragon’s Hoard and Dragonspeaker Shaman. The precon already includes important Dragon support.

Mind Stone

Mind Stone, Foundations Commander #271
An untapped two-mana rock can help the next turn arrive with more mana.
  • It replaces Fire Diamond. Both cost two, but Stone enters untapped and can make mana immediately; Fire Diamond enters tapped.
  • Stone makes colorless mana rather than red. Keep enough Mountains for Lathliss’s two red symbols. Later, pay one, tap and sacrifice Stone to draw a card when you no longer need the mana.

Liquimetal Torque

Liquimetal Torque, Modern Horizons 2 #228
The early mana matters first; turning a nonland permanent into an artifact gives Abrade another target.
  • Replace Commander’s Sphere with a two-mana rock. You give up Sphere’s colored mana and sacrifice-to-draw ability to put the mana source down a turn earlier.
  • Torque makes colorless mana. Its other ability turns a nonland permanent into an artifact for the turn, which can let Abrade destroy a troublesome nonland permanent it normally couldn’t hit. You need a separate way to pay Abrade’s cost.

Ganax, Astral Hunter

Ganax, Astral Hunter, Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate #176
Lathliss’s token counts as a Dragon entry for Ganax, even though it won’t trigger Lathliss again.
  • Replace Goldlust Triad if you want mana from building your board rather than from successful combat. Ganax makes a Treasure when it or another Dragon you control enters, including Dragon tokens.
  • With Lathliss already out, casting Ganax produces two Treasures: one from Ganax entering and one when Lathliss’s token enters. That is useful follow-up mana, not an infinite loop.
  • Both Dragons cost five mana. Ganax gives you Treasure without connecting in combat, but Triad’s myriad copies also trigger Dragon Tempest and Scourge of Valkas when they enter. Those tokens don’t trigger Lathliss. Keep Triad if you prefer that burst of entry damage and extra attackers.
  • Ganax stays in the 99; Choose a Background doesn’t let a Lathliss-led deck take a second commander.

Demand Answers

Demand Answers, Murders at Karlov Manor #122
A spare Treasure or an unwanted card becomes the additional cost for two fresh cards.
  • Replace Minion of the Mighty when you need a dependable way to find another card more than a high-upside attack trigger. Demand Answers costs two mana and draws two cards.
  • You must also discard a card or sacrifice an artifact as you cast it. A spare Treasure can pay that additional cost, but you can’t sacrifice the same Treasure for mana too.
  • If you discard, you spend Demand Answers and the discarded card to draw two. That replaces cards in your hand rather than growing your hand. Minion instead needs an attack with total power six or more to put a Dragon from your hand onto the battlefield tapped and attacking. Keep Minion if you prefer that attack plan.

Big Score

Big Score, Marvel Super Heroes Commander #802
Four mana turns a discarded card into two cards and two Treasures.
  • Replace the seven-mana Hit the Mother Lode with a four-mana instant. Big Score asks you to discard a card, then draws two and creates two untapped Treasures.
  • This makes the setup more predictable, but it gives up Mother Lode’s discover-10 swing and its possible Treasure windfall. Unexpected Windfall already does a similar job in the deck; playing both gives you a second copy of that useful effect.
  • Discard Anger when you can: once it is in your graveyard and you control a Mountain, your creatures have haste. That is a condition to meet, not a reason to keep a hand with no early mana.

Reign of Dragons Optional Premium Upgrades

Five optional Reign of Dragons additions with exact cuts
AddCutOctober 20 nonfoil reference
Wrathful Red DragonCrucible of Fire$10.13
CLB #207
Terror of the PeaksWarstorm Surge$29.04
OTJ #149
Chandra, Torch of DefianceOutpost Siege$2.30
FRA #244
Jeska's WillMana Geyser$39.99
MKC #156
Cavern-Hoard DragonTyrant's Familiar$20.00
LTC #31
  • All five optional additions cost $101.46, taking the full ten-card proposal to $110.90. You don’t need all five to improve the deck.
  • Wrathful is the first optional addition to consider if you want your existing damage sweepers to threaten opponents. Chandra is the inexpensive flexibility option.
  • Skipping Jeska’s Will keeps Mana Geyser and reduces the nine-card purchase to $70.91. You can also stop after the first five.

Wrathful Red Dragon

Wrathful Red Dragon, Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate #207
Damage to your Dragons can become damage to opponents and their non-Dragon creatures.
  • Replace Crucible of Fire if you prefer a damage engine to its +3/+3 bonus. When one of your Dragons takes damage, Wrathful’s trigger makes that Dragon deal the same amount to a target that isn’t a Dragon.
  • With Wrathful already on the battlefield, Blasphemous Act can turn damage to several Dragons into separate 13-damage triggers. They still trigger if those Dragons die to the damage.
  • Opposing Dragon creatures can’t be targets of these triggers. Magmaquake hits creatures without flying, so it normally misses your flying Dragons and won’t set off Wrathful through them. The combination needs both cards and a Dragon board; it isn’t a guaranteed win or protection from exile.

Terror of the Peaks

Terror of the Peaks, Outlaws of Thunder Junction #149
The next creature entering supplies the damage, so Terror works best with follow-up bodies.
  • Replace Warstorm Surge to put the entry-damage engine on a five-mana Dragon. Terror itself doesn’t trigger from its own entry, but Lathliss’s new token can trigger it.
  • With Lathliss already out, Terror enters and Lathliss makes a 5/5 token. Terror sees that token and can deal five damage. You don’t get an extra five from Terror seeing itself.
  • The tradeoff is resilience: opponents can remove Terror with creature removal that wouldn’t touch Warstorm Surge. Its extra three-life targeting cost is not ward and can be paid.
Check Terror of the Peaks listings

Chandra, Torch of Defiance

Chandra, Torch of Defiance, Reality Fracture #244
Choose mana, a chance to cast a spell, or creature removal according to the turn.
  • Replace Outpost Siege when flexible mana and immediate choices matter more than a durable enchantment. One +1 ability makes two red mana; the other exiles the top card and lets you cast it as that ability resolves.
  • You still pay for the exiled spell, and you can’t save it to cast later that turn. This ability doesn’t let you play an exiled land. If you don’t cast the card, each opponent takes two damage. Outpost Siege’s Khans mode instead gives you the turn to play its card, including a land if you have a land play left.
  • You can normally activate only one loyalty ability per turn. Chandra can be attacked, so don’t count on her as a permanent two-mana discount. Cutting Outpost Siege also loses its alternative Dragons mode, which deals one damage whenever one of your creatures leaves the battlefield.
Check Chandra, Torch of Defiance listings

Jeska's Will

Jeska's Will, Murders at Karlov Manor Commander #156
Lathliss must be on the battlefield when you cast Will to choose both modes.
  • Replace Mana Geyser only if your group is comfortable with the stronger burst card. Jeska’s Will is marked as a Game Changer in the checked record and is the most expensive addition here.
  • Its mana mode counts cards in one targeted opponent’s hand. You may choose both modes only if you control a commander as you cast the spell; having Lathliss in the command zone isn’t enough.
  • The exiled cards can be played only that turn, and normal costs and land-play limits still apply. Mana Geyser can make more mana against several opponents with tapped lands, so keeping it is a sensible budget choice.
Check Jeska's Will listings

Cavern-Hoard Dragon

Cavern-Hoard Dragon, Tales of Middle-earth Commander #31
The discount rewards one opponent’s artifact pile, while the combat reward follows the player you hit.
  • Replace Tyrant’s Familiar if opponents regularly control many artifacts. Cavern-Hoard costs nine before its discount, which uses the greatest artifact count among your opponents, not all their artifacts added together.
  • One opponent with five artifacts reduces the generic cost by five. Its two red symbols remain. After it deals combat damage to a player, its Treasure count uses that damaged player’s artifacts.
  • You give up Familiar’s conditional +2/+2 and its seven-damage attack trigger. Control your commander as Familiar attacks to get that trigger; losing the commander afterward won’t remove a trigger already on the stack. Keep Familiar if your opponents don’t build artifact-heavy boards; a nine-mana card with little discount makes the deck clumsier.

Reign of Dragons Mana and Curve

  • Replace Temple of the False God with a Mountain you already own. Temple produces no mana before you control five lands; an untapped red source helps cast your early plays.
  • Keep 38 lands. This change raises the basic Mountain count from 32 to 33 and sits alongside the ten nonland swaps.
  • The full proposal contains 100 cards, including Lathliss, and 21 cards whose printed creature types include Dragon, up from 19. Taurean Mauler’s changeling makes it a Dragon in play and in other zones, beyond that printed-type count.
  • Average nonland mana value changes only slightly, from 3.73 to 3.68. Cavern-Hoard’s printed nine mana still counts as nine here; a possible discount is not a lower printed cost.
  • The goal is more useful early mana and cards, not a claim that the whole deck suddenly has a low curve. Keep opening hands with lands and something productive to do before your six-mana commander.
Dragon Tempest, Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander #94
Keep the precon’s Tempest: it gives flying creatures haste and turns every Dragon entry into damage.

Reign of Dragons Win Plan

  • Build mana, land Lathliss and follow her with another Dragon. Dragon Tempest grants haste to a creature with flying as it enters; Anger needs to be in the graveyard while you control a Mountain.
  • Keep enough threats back to rebuild after a board wipe. One Dragon cast after Lathliss can provide two bodies, so you don’t need to put every expensive creature into danger at once.
  • Terror of Mount Velus gives your creatures double strike when it enters. Casting it before combat can turn an established flying board into a lethal attack.
  • When Hellkite Charger attacks, you may pay seven mana as its trigger resolves to untap your attacking creatures and add a combat immediately after this one. There’s no main phase between those combats. Ganax Treasures can help pay, but these changes don’t promise enough mana to repeat combats forever.
  • For another creature-type plan, compare the Giada upgrade path. The Ur-Sphinx list trades the mono-red mana base for more card-draw engines.

  • Lathliss remains the commander. Every add has one named cut; the separate Temple-to-Mountain swap keeps the land count unchanged.
  • The complete list was checked for released cards, mono-red color identity, Commander legality and singleton limits on October 20, 2026. This is a construction review, not a playtesting result.

Reign of Dragons Upgrade Questions

  • Do Lathliss’s tokens make more tokens? No. She requires another nontoken Dragon to enter. Ganax and Dragon Tempest can still trigger from those tokens.
  • Do you need the expensive cards? No. The first five additions cost $9.44 in this snapshot. Make those changes and see which problems remain at your table.
  • Can Ganax bring a Background into the command zone? Not while Lathliss is the commander. Ganax is an ordinary card in this list.
  • Should you switch to Dragonhawk? That is a different build choice. This guide keeps Lathliss’s token plan; compare other mono-red commanders before rebuilding around a different engine.
